Numerical control (NC)  is refers to the method of controlling the manufacturing operation by means directly inserted coded numerical instruction into machine tool.

NC is not machining method rather it is a concept machine control. Although the most popular application of NC can be applied to many other application, including welding sheet metalworking, riveting and etc.

So the principle of NC is direct insertion of numerical data at some point. NC is define as form of programmable automation in which process is controlled by number, letter and symbol.

In case the machine tools this programmable automation is used or operation the machine. The capability to change the program makes NC suitable for low and medium production.

NC can applied in variety process. and it divided into 2 category :

  • Machine tools application : such as drilling , milling , trilling or another work metal

  • Non-Machine tools application : Assembly, drafting, inspection

Basic Component of NC System
*It is scope of NC and continue for the next process for CNC

Machine tools application is called apart program.

Additional instruction such  as spindle speed, feed rate, cutting.

The development of even better machine tools and control units helped spread the use of NC from the machine tool industry to all facets of manufacturing.
